"JUST A SWIFT PASSING?
Wyomissing students recall hit country singer

It's a normal day for Wyomissing students. The bell rings, classes switch, etc., but as they walk the halls, do some students wonder if the hit country singer Taylor Swift has also meandered from class to class along the same route? What about opening doors? are students gripping the same door handles that Taylor once touched? 
    Some students and teachers remember Taylor, 18 [2008], as a student and not a platinum music artist. Others have personal anecdotes about Taylor. Her millions of fans across the country may wonder what Taylor's early life was like; the students and teachers at Wyomissing can recall much of the singer?s early school career.
    Aside from her singing ability, Taylor was a "typical" student at Wyomissing, according to people who knew her. She participated in extracurricular activities, did schoolwork and had a close group of friends.

    "Taylor participated in sports and was solid on her academics", said Corinne Fecho, Taylor's junior high volleyball coach. Fecho had the chance to know Taylor as an athlete, but the reactions to Taylor are diverse among the actual students.
    Many of Taylor's songs are written about school-related events. In her songs and interviews, Taylor has hinted that she was "different" in relation to her peers. As Taylor herself admits on Amazon.com, "It was when i was 12 years old [circa 2002], and a complete outcast at school. I was a lot different than all the other kids, and i never really knew why. I was taller, and sang country music at karaoke bars and festivals on weekends while other girls went to sleep-overs. Some days i woke up not knowing if anyone was going to talk to me that day."
    Taylor's peers at Wyomissing have different memories of her, but there is a common notion that Taylor was a bit awkward in various ways. Fecho remembers Taylor as being "tall and somewhat gawky". As stated on an article on Taylor Swift from azcentral.com, "She's a willowy thing, 5 foot 11" in her bare feet but probably 6' 1" in her stylish cowgirl boots".
    Sure she's tall, but that's good when you're a volleyball player, right? Molly Burton, a senior at wyomissing high school, remembers Taylor as being "socially awkward" and not getting along with many people." Taylor has a cliquish group of friends and she was not a social butterfly. Taylor's friends were supportive of her, however. Fecho remembers attending a social event at which Taylor's friends were "running around, helping her selling some CD's."
    Taylor is described as a "squeaky-clean, straight-A, all-American girl," by azcentral.com in the same article. It is easy to credit Taylor with the sweet "girl next door" image. Taylor began developing her reputation while at Wyomissing. She was selling her CDs at the social event, which Fecho remembers, to raise money for the reading hospital. When she appeared on "America's Got Talent" in August 2007, it was as a favor to sing alongide one of her "biggest fans." As wikipedia.com acknowledged, "On September 21, 2007, Taylor launched a campaign to protect children from online predators." It is events like these that her fans take into account when they think of Taylor as a role model. Although she may have been distant to many of her peers, some people knew Taylor better than others.
    Cara Wojciechowski, an eight grader at Wyomissing Junior High School, remembers that Taylor "used to let me play her guitar" and sing with her." Cara used to, and still does, look up to Taylor for many reasons. The relationship between Cara and Taylor has not significantly changed. Although Cara is not able to keep in touch with Taylor as much as she used to, Cara says that over the summer, she talked on the phone with Taylor, who seemed like the same person.
    Other students at Wyomissing think that Taylor has become too caught up in the acting buiness. Clara Mikhail, a senior at Wyomissing, describes Taylor, "She forgot who she is. She developed her country accent two weeks before she left Wyomissing".
    Fecho said she thinks that "Taylor no longer promotes herself as being from Wyomissing; she's more about the Tennessee, Nashville thing." Taylor has indeed gotten her big break in Nashville, but there has been some miscommunication about her "country connections" to Wyomissing. In the article by azcentral.com, it is said, "she grew up in Wyomissing, Pa., on a christmas tree farm." 
As Molly [burton] remembers, the family did have a farm in new jersey when we were younger," she said.
    Despite the emphasis on Taylor's country image, Fecho said, "Taylor does not belong to anyone; she has worked her whole life and has ended up in Nashville."
    Many students do not feel the same about Taylor's musical acomplishments. Alyssa Charlanza, a sophomore at Wyomissing, thinks that, "her music is more image than acomplishment."
    There are more junior high students who are enthusiastic about Taylor having gone to Wyomissing, Francesca Ciatto, a sophomore at Wyomissing said she thinks, "It's weird that someone famous went to Wyomissing."
    Like many students, Erinn Boguslowski, a sophomore at Wyomissing, is indifferent to the Taylor Swift mystique.
    Fecho recounted a humorous anecdote.
    "In a math teacher's pre-algebra class, a junior high student started freaking out because he received Taylor Swift's pre-algebra textbook. Now the book is locked away in a cabinet," she said.
    You probably won't find any used tissues of Taylor's for sale on eBay... Cara [Wojciechowski] has something much better. As she tells the story, "i was browsing a magazine a few months ago and came across some pictures of Taylor when she was younger ... she was wearing a shirt that she gave to me!"
    Besides these mementos, Taylor has indeed had an impact on Wyomissing.
    Whether the feelings are good, bad, scornful, enthusiastic or personal, the students of Wyomissing realize that someone so famous has passed through the same halls.
    As the youngest artist to ever win the Songwriter / Artist of the Year Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International, Taylor has successfully launched her career as a country singer.
    Taylor and her family moved to Nashville about four years ago and she initially worked as a songwriter for Sony, according to her Web site, www.taylorswift.com [in 2008, check web archive if you want to see]. Now she's signed with Big Machine Records. She attended Hendersonville (Tenn.) High School through sophomore year, and was home-schooled for her junior year, according to www.taylorswift.com
    In a Feb. 28 article in the Washington Post, Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records was quoted as saying, "My fear is that she'll conquer the world by the time she's 19. She'll get to the mountaintop and say: 'This is it?' Because she is just knocking down all of these goals that we didn't even have for the first album ... My job at this point is really to protect her and not burn her out."
    The majority of students and teachers at Wyomissing consider Taylor Swift to be a credit to the school, which is just as well, for it all started in Wyomissing.
